Just for fun, I’m putting in an 1880s fashion plate, because the bustles at this time could be very pronounced. While these may look fancy to us, they were rather like the 19th century equivalent of sweatpants: casual attire. Sometimes they were called a Mother Hubbard (and worn without a belt, rather like a muumuu) or a “tea gown” or “wrapper.” They didn’t have to be worn with a corset, so they were popular for housework. They were also comfortable. This would have been a common “dress” women might have worn on the frontier. This is a huge question, but let me point you in the right direction with some fairly-easy-to-find resources. **There ARE other fashion magazines that may be good, but these are fairly easy to find or even find in reprints. 1800s- Styles were based loosely on ancient Greek and Roman fashion. White was the popular color, and fabrics were fine even to being almost transparent. Empire-style high waists on dresses. Skirts are relatively narrow. Multicolored shawls and turbans are popular.
