I had Capitals season tickets for a decade. I got a custom jersey done for myself, and I went completely top city on it. I’m talking, blank official jersey, with a full custom nameplate and number from the team’s official pro shop. All told, it ran me nearly four hundred bucks. Yes, I still have it, even though I’m now living in Tampa Bay Lightning country, but that’s another story. As for the Why: if I’m going to be in the building, for every home game I can attend, I’m not going in there in street clothes, to just sit on my duff and be entertained. I could do that easier and cheaper at a sports bar. If I’m in the building, it’s because I’m there to cheer the team on, in person. If you’re at all familiar with ceremonial magick, then you probably know that the various ritual accoutrements, strictly speaking, aren’t there for the spirits’ benefit. The implements are there to get YOU into the mindset that you need to be in, to make magic happen (with or without the K). Same idea with a custom jersey: the only time I usually wear it, is game nights, and official team events. That’s it. My Caps jersey is “reserved” for Really Important team-related events—sanctified, in the “set apart” sense. Because of that, subconsciously, it becomes a bit of a ceremonial implement, almost a kind of talisman, in its own right. As a result, putting it on gets me into my game night frame of mind faster than any amount of liquid preparation. And when I get home afterwards, take it off, and hang it up, I know it’s time to go back to being my everyday self. As an aside, that might partially explain how I could go right to sleep after chugging an 8-shot, no room, iced venti Americano before getting on the Metro heading down to the arena.
