I suppose that with reference to a particular school in a particular district, where all children are from the same social class, there would be no need to worry about this. But generally, in most schools, there is at least a little difference in the financial situations faced by different students. When you’re wearing that uniform, your clothes no longer define you. Some people argue that uniforms stop the concerned children from self-expression, but I disagree. Children can express themselves in ways that do not require looking at the clothing. And if they wish to express themselves by how they dress, that can be done after school. I think the people who argue against school uniforms often miss their point. Their purpose is not to show anyone which school someone is from, or inculcate a sense of pride in the students, though generally some schools do like that idea, but the greater idea is that all children are the same. Schools cannot change someone’s physical appearance, but they can change the way they dress, to make sure they know that in school premises, they are just children. Neither rich nor poor. And that is especially important for children to know.
